I saw the original short film of 'Lights Out' on YouTube last year. So when I heard that it was being made into a feature length film I was quick to suggest a Mad About Horror staff night out!
Based on recent experiences I was prepared to be disappointed. I was also prepared to make apologies to my colleagues for dragging them out of the office!
A supernatural entity that can only move in the dark proves to be a rather unsettling experience. The film delves straight into the action with a scene which is reminiscent of the original YouTube outing. We were on the edge of our seats straight away.
I loved the premise and the jump scares were well set up. If I did see them coming they were still built up to unsettle me while I waited for the inevitable shock!
For the most part I thought the performances were good. If I'm being picky, I didn't particularly like the actor playing the little boy. I also like a higher body count in my horror flicks. But it was a great for a first time director. I'm pleased to see that they are planning a sequel.
And, I didn't have to make any apologies to my colleagues'other than for any lack of sleep they may have experienced! I, myself, have to admit to switching lights on BEFORE entering any rooms when I got home.
I would definitely recommend a trip to the cinema to see this one. Also check out the short on YouTube if you haven't already, which features the director's wife who also has a cameo in the feature length version.
Next on the list is 'Blair Witch'.
Sleep well!
