Here at MadAboutHorror, much of our year revolves around Halloween. The excitement, the planning, but most of all, preparing for the chaos as our Halloween masks and decorations fly off the shelves!
Halloween is such a fascinating time that comes and goes so quickly. We’ve been seeing that the popularity seems to be growing each year – at least here in the UK. So we’ve dug in and researched some Halloween statistics that we found interesting!
Read on and we’ll dive into some interesting Halloween stats for 2024.
Halloween Spending Is Going Up and Up
While we love and thrive on Halloween, how much is actually spent on it?
Well in 2023 alone, Brits spent an estimated £1 billion on Halloween-related spending! This is on a huge growth curve, quadrupling the spend from £230 million just 10 years ago.
While Halloween is getting more and more popular in the UK, it’s always been a much larger affair in America. In 2024 the US is projected to spend $11.6 billion on Halloween. That’s an average of $103 per person, or around £79!
COVID Caused A Peak In Halloween Excitement
Covid seems to have affected almost everything in our society, and Halloween is no exception! The chart below shows the UK interest in Halloween by year, on a scale of 1-100.
As you can see, it was actually Halloween 2021 that was the largest on record! We think it’s due to it being the first real Halloween after COVID-19 – since Halloween 2020 was still during lockdowns. 2021 was the year where everyone really went all out, in celebration of being able to leave our homes!
Since then Halloween has been slightly less popular, with 2023 being the lowest interest in recent years. Time will tell with Halloween 2024, but if you ask us it’s shaping up to be a big one!
Who Loves Halloween the Most?
Interestingly, it’s the 25-34 age group that’s most hooked on Halloween. A whopping 86% of this age group plans to celebrate in some form or another. Whether it’s elaborate costumes, decking out their homes in spooky décor, or hosting themed parties, this age bracket tends to splurge, spending an average of £124 per person—about 20% more than the general population.
And they’re not alone. A growing trend is the rise in spending on Halloween decorations, which has increased by 42% since 2019. From larger-than-life skeletons to intricate light shows, Halloween decorations are becoming just as important as the costumes!
Halloween Spending Starts Early
While we hear stories of excited Christmas spenders starting in summer, the same goes for Halloween.
In fact, early Halloween shopping has become a big trend, with nearly 47% of consumers in 2024 starting their Halloween spending before October even begins. This marks a significant increase from just 40% five years ago.
Many are eager to capture the autumn vibe early, from securing costumes to setting up intricate yard decorations. At Mad About Horror we do our best to cater for this, offering pre-orders and early Halloween sales from September or even August.
Halloween Going From Strength to Strength
As Horror and Halloween lovers, we’re so excited that Halloween in the UK is going from strength to strength. As the nation adopts more of a US ‘Halloween Season’ mindset, it means we’re seeing more Halloween decorations, more spooky setups on windows, and incredible Halloween-focused events across the country.
At Mad About Horror, we’re thrilled to be a part of this growing excitement, as Halloween continues to captivate more and more people each year. Here’s to another fantastic season full of screams and laughter!
