When ships vanish near Odo Island, paleontologist Kyohei Yamane (Takashi Shimura) is sent to investigate. He uncovers Godzilla, a towering monster that soon attacks Japan. As military efforts fail, scientist Daisuke Serizawa (Akihiko Hirata) deploys his deadly Oxygen Destroyer, finally bringing the beast down in Tokyo Bay.

Since its release, Godzilla has terrified audiences worldwide, influencing legends like Akira Kurosawa and Steven Spielberg. Its groundbreaking special effects and miniatures revolutionised Japanese cinema, spawning over 30 sequels, plus video games, comics, and TV shows, making Godzilla a pop culture icon.

Ifukube’s monumental score—composed in just a week—remains a defining piece of film music history. The deep brass and strings create a sense of massive scale, while a unique resonant string technique gave birth to Godzilla’s iconic roar. Ifukube considered Godzilla’s theme his greatest composition, shaping the sound of the franchise for decades.
