All Hallows Eve Meaning & Why We Wear Halloween Costumes

Understanding this rich history can enhance our appreciation and enjoyment of Halloween, helping us connect more deeply with the traditions we celebrate.

Halloween, as we know it today, is a vibrant celebration full of costumes, decorations, and festivities. However, its origins are far more ancient and diverse, blending Christian and Pagan traditions from different parts of the world. Despite being primarily celebrated in the United States today, Halloween’s roots stretch back to the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian observance of All Saints Day, also known historically as All Hallows Day. Understanding All Hallows Eve Meaning and this rich history can enhance our appreciation and enjoyment of Halloween, helping us connect more deeply with the traditions we celebrate.

The Origins of Halloween: From Samhain to All Hallows Eve

The Christian holiday of All Saints Day, celebrated on November 1st, was historically called All Hallows Day. This day was dedicated to honouring saints and martyrs, and the evening before, October 31st, was known as All Hallows Eve. Over time, the term was shortened by the Scots to Halloween (All Hallow(s) E(v)en).

However, the deeper roots of Halloween lie in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated at the end of the harvest season. Samhain marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time when the Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead was at its thinnest. During this festival, it was thought that spirits could walk the earth. To protect themselves from these wandering spirits, the Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes, often disguising themselves as spirits to avoid being recognised by the ghosts.

The Tradition of Costumes and Colours

The practice of wearing costumes on Halloween has evolved but still retains its original purpose. The Celts believed that by dressing up in frightening costumes, they could ward off harmful spirits. Over time, this practice became a fun tradition, with people donning costumes ranging from the terrifying to the whimsical.

One fascinating theory suggests that the Celts would leave food outside their homes to appease the spirits. Eventually, people began dressing as these spirits to collect the food themselves, leading to the modern tradition of trick-or-treating. Even the classic Halloween colours of black and orange have their origins in Samhain. Black symbolised the death of summer, while orange represented the autumn harvest.
